Instant oatmeal
This morning while making oatmeal I had this idea...
I made my own instant oatmeal concoction. I dumped together quick outs, ground flax, various crushed up nuts, some malted barley, a few pumpkin and sesame seeds, various spices, and a little brown sugar. It's all mixed up in its dry state, awaiting my breakfast needs. All it needs is some water and the microwave. I usally make mine 1/2 C oats to 1 C water. Easy! It's good, had it this morning. Now my breakfast can be ready faster than my coffee. ![]() |

Hey folks, sounds delish! I will try this definately. Chris may I ask you, do you have a protein with your breakfast or just do with the deliciious oats? I do have a problem finding good protein for breakfast as I don't eat meat, I seem to be eating my cott cheese and my peanut butter most days.
I work in an office where there is plenty of food and I mean plenty. I have a long travel in, so I have my cott chesse and raw oats mix at home with a glass of water and cup of herbal nettle tea... now you are saying Yeuuuk!! But when I get to work, I have plain oatcakes and cott cheese on one and peanut butter on the other. A nice cup of green tea and jasmine and I am hot to trot!! I noticed that oakcakes are higher in fat than crumpets, how strange that crumpets are low fat and so tasty, so this is also a choice for me. |

Oatcakes! Man these are a special treat in my family. It was a tradition that unfortunately died with my Nana. There's a long story (in my family) about how she obtained this secret oat cakes recipe from this guy in her town (Buxton) as a going away present (when she moved to the states). I thought it was just a story until now I hear you say the magic word! OATCAKES!!!! Whoa, the memories...
Ok back on topic... This was a pretty old post from me. I have since stopped doing my oatmeal like this and now just go for 1 scoop protein powder mixed with 1/2 C oats. Sometimes I'll add a few nuts or some flax oil. I try to get a lot of protein early in the day now. I personally don't think it's critical that every meal contains a helping of "protein" to pair with a carb, provided you are still getting your 1g per lb body weight per day. However, I do try to make sure I get big portions of protein in the morning and around workout time. I'm not sure if this answered your question... yes, have some protein. I recommend the powder. ![]()

Thanks Chris, The oatcakes I mentioned are not home made and are definately not as good as your nana's sound. If you mail me at sallyjhl@tiscali.co.uk, and send a contact address, I can always send you some and see if you like them? These are thing and are 100% organic and extra healthy, they have no hydrogenated fat, high fibre, suitable for veggies, and have no GM ingredients, they are: 1.1g of protein per oatcake and 5.7g of carbs (of which 0.1g are sugars). I spread p'nut butter or cottage cheese on mine, rather disgustingly, for a carb hit is sliced banana and a thin layer of p'nut butter as a special treat. They are baked in Scotland UK and are made by a company called Nairn's in Edinburgh. So do let me know and I'd be happy to send some to you.
