Holding breath for cardio
I wasn't sure if I asked this here before or not, but here it goes again anyway...
What do you guys think about the idea of holding your breath for cardio? If I take a deep breath and hold it, then do it again, then do it again, then do it again, it will really get my heart pumping. Isn't the point of cardio to get your heart pumping? So, therefore is it conceivable that we could get an anaerobic cardio session while sitting still? Let's discuss....

That's kind of a wild idea.
I got no information for you on this one, I just thought it was bizarre. |

I doubt you would get so hypoxic by this method that you could conk yourself out.
It's not like you're holding your breath for 20 minutes. It's more like interval breathing. EDIT: Actually, I retract that. I tried it for a few minutes, and it was not comfortable. I suppose I could see fainting happening in extreme cases. |

Well hold your breath, then let it out, then hold it again.. just do it as long as you can
..maybe someone with a HR monitor can track the changes for us... any takers?

The HR elevates from CO2 buidup when you hold your breath...I don't think oxygen deprivation exercises can increase CV fitness levels...and cannot be considered as a cardio discipline..IMO
Cardio exercise can however increase the duration of the ability to hold your breath for a longer period of time due to increased oxygen saturation levels of the lungs and muscle.. gnash

I just don't see the benefit of holding your breath to make your heart rate go up. Running harder/faster is probably a better way to do that. Keep in mind when you are doing cardio it's aerobic; your body is screaming for oxygen. Being in better shape helps you utilize that oxygen more efficiently, so you don't need new breath AS QUICKLY, but you most def. need to breath. When I'm in peak shape I find I breath very slowly during a run, but that's only because my body is better at using that air. So my 2 cents: don't hold your breath when you run. |
