Heart Rate Confusion

Would someone fill me in on what's a good heart rate for cadio? Mine was up to about 140 and the trainer at the Y seemed concerned. I've picked up on different threads that its good to get it up really high. What's safe and how do you calculate what's good for an individual? Thank you so much. I'm in week five and loving it! Joan

HR for an untrained person should not exceed 75%..220, minus age, x 75%..

The age in your profile is 58, so around HR 120 would be a good max until you are well conditioned...IMO, your trainer was right...at HR 140 that's a bit high..

Welcome to the forums,

gnash

Hi Joan! This is a really good question. I usually go to mayoclinic.com for a lot of their calculators and stuff. Anyway, I found a target heart rate calculator there too...

Tool: Target heart rate calculator - MayoClinic.com

My heart rate during cardio is normally between 170-180... which is higher than what it's supposed to be I guess (according to the calculation). I worked out really really hard today and I was at 207... guess I should tone it down a little??

By the way... great question!
