Post-workout eating? Confused

Okay...I don't have my book in front of me today (first time in 2 weeks I have forgotten it)...but I thought I remembered to not eat for an hour post-workout...when I just signed up for the round 1 challenge, I saw this ad on the Body-for-LIFE site:

Taken within 30 minutes after your workout, the high-quality protein in EAS® Myoplex® helps you refuel and build lean muscle.

I am confused! Should you eat 30 mins after WO??? Sigh.

Hey Lil! I think it's an hour after cardio, and protein within a half hour of weight training. Does that sound right?

There's much debate about when to drink your whey. A lot of people seem to think that right after your workout is best. I split my serving in 2. I drink 1 scoop just before (about 15mins) and 1 scoop right after (between 15-30 mins after w.o.) this way I figure I get at least half of it right.
The idea is that your muscles need the protein right away. So it's more for the protein than the carbs. Whey is ideal at this time b/c it breaks down so much faster than meat.

So drinking a shake within 30 minutes after a workout is fine (best) according to what I've seen.

There was a study last year that suggested that muscle receptors are primed to uptake protein for 15 minutes after training..30 minutes is probably good too..The only thing was that the study was sponsored by LUNA bars,so it was kind of tainted..I think it has merit though

Neat graphic addition there Lillyo..you're smart..

So in theory.... If the receptors are primed to uptake protein for 15 minutes after training, does it make sense that this would be the case during training? Does that 15 minute clock start as soon as you put down the weight? That's why I take some before and some after. This way it's already in my stomach being digested by the time my muscles want it.

*Not sure if that was clear: I mean, 15 minutes after the start of training all the way to 15 minutes after finish seems to me the window. Or does it have something to do with the rush of oxygen after finishing. (resuming aerobic respiration)

I have seen more people do post w/o protein than pre or during...usually it's water during training and I don't know much about pre workout protocol, except that I prefer light nutrition pre w/o...Maybe it's preference..

I think that's the other reason I like to drink it before... it makes me so thirsty. It's like I have milky cotton mouth and I visit the fountain between every 3rd set (takes me just about 1 min to go get drink and come back). I don't keep track, but I bet I drink at least 32oz during w.o.

DOH... I didn't think about that for cardio.. I usually go to cardio right after I wake up (not today though cuz my dogs woke me up early....)... because I heard that's best - so I have to wait another hour after cardio to eat? I'll die!!! uh oh..

No, I think you can eat as soon as you're done. I usually have to at least walk home from the gym (5-10 minutes), I almost always have to make something, and then it works out to be between 10 and 60 minutes after w.o. that I eat. On weight days I drink a scoop of protein as soon as I get home, but then I start cooking my meal and eat it usually about 60 mins after w.o... I don't know where I was going with this... just eat. If you're hungry don't wait.
