Instant Oatmeal

In packets or bulk, quick oats are a great way to get some whole grain carbs. I eat oats almost every day and have discovered that you don't even really need to cook them. As long as they're "quick oats", just warm water (from the tap) will soften them up enough. I keep a couple packets in my desk just in case I forget to bring enough food (happens more than I like to admit).

Oatmeal is great! I haven't had regular cooked oatmeal in a while, but it's great in its role as the carb in the protein pancakes, and I've found another good use for them: Since I'm cycling my calories and starting with a "muscle-building" week, I'm currently aiming for 600 calories per meal instead of the usual 300 I use for weight loss. One of my struggles was adding those calories in without losing the convenience of the meal habits I developed.

One thing that helped was my method of adding calories to my Myoplex shakes: I dump the shake in a blender and add a banana, 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed, 1/2 cup oatmeal, and 1/2 cup milk, and blend it! It tastes decent and gives me a quick and easy 600 calorie muscle-building meal that I can put in a large shaker cup (28oz cup was just barely big enough) to take to work/school with me.

I almost always make my oatmeal a little soupy and then drink it down. It's easy to down up to a cup (1 dry or 2c cooked) this way. Calories boost!

The cool thing about instant oatmeal is that all brands are the same thing (assuming we're talking plain oatmeal). So basically grab any brand (the cheapest) it's the same thing in the discount box as the Quaker. It will be on the cereal isle of the grocery store and it usually comes in round cardboard canisters. Since it sounds like this is a new item for you, I'd recommend buying the canister since it comes with instructions. I buy mine in bulk though, it's much cheaper this way.
