Help! Can't stand protein shakes!
I tried to drink a protein shake today but it was NASTY! How am I supposed to do this challenge when I can't even drink a friggin' shake!
![]() I hope it's just the brand... I purchased it @ Wal-Mart, "Six Star Muscle" brand, chocolate whey protein powder. I truly hope that all brands don't taste like this... Or maybe vanilla is better? It was the only protein powder they had...Need help knowing which brands taste/mix the best & where to get 'em! |

Hi,
Last time I did the challenge, I didn't drink any shakes. For one, I agree they're nasty. Secondly, I like to chew my calories, I hate to waste calories or meals on liquid! Anyway, I would just make sure you have plenty of portable proteins like cottage cheese and hard boiled eggs. If you really frrl like you want to do the shakes, it helps to add fruit and mix them with ice in the blender. You can totally do this! |

..Don't give up. Shakes span anywhere between "dry heave inducing" to "very tasty". Personally, I'm kind of like a rented mule---I'll eat/drink most anything regardless of taste Not sure on the nutrition...but I've heard the Atkins Shakes are very tasty. I think Myoplex is really good, as long as it is mixed with milk (adds a lot of calories). I drink my protein w/ cold water, in a shaker. I get mine at: Quest Nutrition Choc. and vanilla are both very good, Pinacolada not so much. Thing I like, don't have to use a blender with this brand, can literally stir it smooth....but I shake it.Another thought---if you aren't used to/don't like an "artificially sweetened" taste, I don't know if you'll like any shakes/bars. |

Hey Wannabsexy,
Unless you want to exclude shacks completely out. If you want great tasting shacks, it's probably going to cost you more. Unfortunately. Cheap protein is often terrible tasting. The Myoplex brand I find is pretty good. But if you really want something great tasting and great protein. As to my understanding "Muscle Milk" protein is the best you could get. That's what I'm using and it's the best tasting protein I've ever had. But it's not exactly cheap. But it's not overpriced either. Goodluck Pat |

Okay, I'll try another brand. My son started drinking that mix and he said it makes his stomach ache sometimes. I'm going to have to figure it out because I really don't have time to eat 6 meals, so I'll have to substitute 1-2 shakes per day. Thanks for the link to Quest jonredbird. I'll try them out.

I agree that the wally world shakes can be rough. I buy that stuff for cooking with whey and only drink when I'm out of everything else and don't feel like cooking (hardly ever). Milk is a must! Fruit will help too.
Muscle Milk is about the best thing around. BSN's syntha6 is good too. Becareful of too many shakes though. My girl and I started biting each others heads off. The shakes made us go into rages over silly things. Within a week of quitting MM we were normal. MM is still the best though, just cycle it with other things and if you get overly angry stop drinking it. ![]() I personally don't buy anything EAS, b/c there are a lot of cheaper options that are the same or better. But that's just me... The thing with shakes is you really can't beat them for convenience. I especially like them before bed when I want something sweet. |

It's a common side effect of protein overdose, among other things...
I think some of these shakes are like little hormone bombs. I still drink some, but I'm on a whey only kick right now. Some of the fancier drinks have extra oomph in them and I think that may be the source of PMS-like attitude. |

...That is one of the most interesting things I've ever read regarding the mood swings. I've never heard anything like that---was it like an amped-up-testosterone mood swing, or like cranky/sick, or what?? I don't mind adding a little natural "spice" to my moods!

No it wasn't a pleasant feeling. It was like we turned into the incredible hulk, but without the green muscles, just anger. Like I can't think of a real example, but here's a fake scenario that might have made be throw a tantrum... Chris, would you please take the trash out? NO WAY YOU CRAZY B**** I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING YOU TELL ME, GO TO HELL!!!! Obviously this would be overreacting. I might think those things normally, but I would never scream them at the top of my lungs.

Yeah see... this is why I call them hormone bombs... The aggresive feelings stopped within about 3 or 4 days of switching to cheap ol whey.

almond milk is sold in the health food stores and made from almonds. I buy the unsweetened version. People who are allergic to milk use it as they would soy milk. It comes in reg, unsweetened, choc and vanilla. I use unsweetened to keep the sugar content down. It is not a protein source.
