Milk

Here's another tip for those trying to gain some healthy weight. Drink skim milk. I don't do it everyday, but having milk with your meals is an easy way to add some healthy calories to your diet. It's roughly balanced by itself, so it doesn't alter you meal compositions. Drink up!

Have you heard the idea that one of the best post-work out snacks is a glass of chocolate milk? I keep hearing this in different places and I really would like to believe it LOL. I can't stand plain milk... blech... but add a bit of chocolate and it's a whole.nother.ballgame!

I've heard the same thing. I like milk but I agree, throw somme chocolate in there and you just can't go wrong.

Well this could be a legitimate recommendation, but there are a few things to consider... Chocolate milk is usually sweetened with sugar (or similar), and in this case that's a good thing. This extra sugar combined with already present milk sugars and protein does make a great post workout snack... BUT fat slows carb digestion. So in order for this theory to be good, you'd have to consume fat free chocolate milk...

The idea is sound though. It's effectively a diluted protein shake. And by diluted, I only mean the protein because it isn't concentrated like in powdered form (whey concentrate).

Mmmmm so maybe adding protein powder could "pump it up" and make it a legit post work out snack? Ooooh.... this is good.

Yep, made with skim milk, I think that would be wicked good. Use different flavors of protein powder to mix it up (banana cream, strawberry) and I bet there could be some really good PWO shakes. I may have to try that tonight...

About 99 percent of the time I make my protien shakes with milk. I really don't like them with water.

Chocolate, while OK post workout, is a far cry from optimal. I would recommend a beverage that has been scientifically designed based on research to boost protein synthesis post workout (hydrolyzed whey protein + BCAAs + maltodextrin/dextrose). A couple of good products are Biotest SURGE and Myogenix Aftershock.

This is the most important meal of the day.

Take care,

There is a great article on milk in the back of this month's Muscle and Fitness. Apparently there was a study done where athletes drank milk, water, or powerade after strenuous exercise. It seems they peed out more water and powerade than milk. They concluded that milk is better for replenishing electrolytes and rehydrating you. They also touted the benefits of drinking milk after a workout and how it's a great substitute when you don't have whey handy.
