length of workout

Hey all, I've been on the program three days now. We've had a chance to do every type of workout, and except for the aerobics, we're going waaay over time. Of course, that's to be expected the first week when we're just starting out and getting used to the gym layout and all. BUT -- I was wondering how many people actually stick to the 46 minute workout?

Because it seems to me that if you do alot of individual exercises, where you're working first the right then the left, then you can't possibly stick to the schedule Bill has outlined in his book.

I agree. I don't think I've gone over an hour, but on my upper body workout, I'm consistently b/t 50 - 55 minutes since the bent over dumbbell rows and bicep curls are done one arm at a time. As for my lower body workout, that takes roughly 40-45 minutes (Like Ivydee, I also do obliques in addition to abs, but I just do one 15 rep set for each side).

If you were having trouble finishing your cardio in 20 minutes, I'd be concerned.

Hahaha, no, no trouble finishing cardio in 20 minutes. But from reading your post, I was reminded of another question I had. Should you do an entire pyramid on first one side, then the other, or should you do first right then left on every rep? Or does this depend on the exercise? Like the bent over dumbbell rows for example...I was thinking it might involve less running back and forth between the dumbell rack if I had just done my 12's on my right, then 12's on my left, and so on....rather than 12, 10, 8, etc on first right then left. But then I didn't know how the rest in between would work? Would the time you're working the left count as the minute rest for your right?

I do it the way Ivydee described. When doing bent over dumbbell rows or bicep curls, I do 12 on right, 12 on left, brief rest (less than 1 min.), 10 on right, 10 on left, etc. If you do one entire side (through 6 sets) then the other, you'll definitely be going well over one hour...
