Protein powders, with milk or without?
Im taking Whey Tech 24 the Vitamin Shoppe brand of protein powder. After a little research though Im finding conflicting statements about whether or not to take it with milk or with water.
Some say its better to take with water because milk takes to long for the body to digest and protein needs to be absorbed quickly. Others say its better take with milk because...I forget why. Anyways today I took it with milk for the first time and it actually tasted pretty darn good. So whats the deal, keep it going with milk or no?

Milk is something on the order of 80% casein. This is a slow digesting protein. The quantity in your milk isn't going to make your shake too slow at any time other than right BEFORE your workout. All other times the casein is good for you.
Milk does add calories though. So don't drink too much, unless you want to gain weight.

Makes complete sense, thanks Chris, thanks. But when you say it adds calories, is it any different than drinking ready made protein shakes? Dont they have milk in them and/or calories?
By the way, the directions on the Whey Tech say to take "a scoop" with either milk or water. But the container doesnt come with a scoop so I just guesstimate and put about 2 spoon fulls. Right or wrong?

by the sounds of things youve purchased an extremely poor quality whey supplement there cos if they dont provide u with a scouper then thats a seriously sh!t product. if theyve made the mistake of not putting one in then there an extremly poor company cos that just wouldnt happen with tops brands such as eas as for the milk remeber that you need 2-3litres of water a day. so if you have a protein shake made with milk then u will also have to drink 1-2 glasses of water on its own too. you could find yourself going the toilet every 5 mins. |

If there really is no scoop, then the best thing I can think of would be to get a cheap food scale and weigh out whatever the container says is the serving size. |

I have a surpluss of scoops at this point. You usually get 1 per tub, sometimes none, and sometimes 2. For some reason I can't make myself throw them out. Anyway, I'm pretty sure "a scoop" is 1/8 cup. I can double check for you tonight (provided I remember).
Mixing with milk adds calories, but it also adds protein and carbs. When taken at the right time, the calories really won't matter. But it is important to think about the extra calories you're consuming by mixing your shakes with milk. If you aren't losing the weight you want, it may be from the milk. But, if you are trying to gain weight, the milk is a good thing. The RTDs are made with water. Also, I count my milk portions as water. I don't see any reason not to. Of course more water won't hurt, but there's no need to drink "extra" water if you have milk.

Well, you inspired me to test it, Chris (don't know why I didn't think of it before). The scoop that came with my EAS protein is actually almost exactly 1/3 of a cup!

This is currently being discussed in another thread: Use milk to make shakes
Either place is fine, just thought I'd link them together.

Yep, I checked at home, 1 scoop = 1/3 cup. This is much more than I thought.

FYI: I stopped by Vitamin Shoppe to pick up some stuff and while I was there I mentioned that there was no scoop in the Whey Tech Pro 24. Sales guy told me that people tell him that all the time but there actually is one in there you just have to dig a little bit for it. It gets settled under the powder during shipping. Went home...lo and behold he was right.

My rule of thumb with milk is:
As long as it's skim, and it's post workout, you should be fine. If you are doing it as a meal, I do Water and fruit, such as vanilla with frozen mango chunks in it blended with water and Ice. Tasty! Chris is spot on with the calories being " right calories", as milk is loaded with protein. I have not noticed milk affecting my weight loss at all, in fact, I am seeing GREAT results thus far. |

milk will also slow down the release of the protein which is not a good thing post workout when you want the protein to go straight to the muscle as fast as possible. to many cups of milk per day adds unwanted fat. bills says that if you must use milk then make sure its 100% skimmed or soya milk and that you have no more than 2 small glasses per day you must also take into consideration that you need 2 glasses of water with every meal. if you have a glass of milk in your protein shake then its going to be pretty hard to also drink 2 glasses of water on top of that liquid you have already consumed. you might find yourslef foing to the toilet very frequently |

IMO milk takes the place of water when you drink it with a meal. It's very good for you. 2 glasses per day seems fine to me, but I wouldn't consider it a strict rule. Mass gainers should drink 1% or 2% for the extra calories. Dieters are fine with skim.

I would try the non shake protein drinks. They taste delicious and usually have alot less sugars and calories than their milkshake counterparts. I drink ABS Grape protein drinks and they are delicious. 35g protein and only 150 calories
