Worth spending time with the instructor?
Hi everyone
Yesterday I went to the bally fitness, the instructor helped me doing many exercises the proper way. I must admit that it helped as I have not been doing weight exercises in my life. Do you guys think its worth paying the personal trainer $300 a month for the first two months so that I know everything. Please give your opinions |

Personally... no...
but that's just me... if you think it's important and you have the money, there's certainly nothing wrong with it. I've learned almost all my exercises through online videos and from reading muscle magazines. Anytime I see a workout I reread the description... I can't tell you how many times I've read how to do a bench press..

I agree with Chris. I wouldn't even consider it for myself--I'm almost obsessive about researching and learning how to do things independently and self-sufficiently, and $300/month is a LOT of money for me right now.
But there are many people who benefit greatly from personal instruction--both in terms of helping them learn how to do the exercises correctly, and in terms of having someone else help them stay motivated. If you feel like you're in that category, and the price isn't a big deal for you, and most importantly if you WANT to do it, then go for it. |

I would say make a deal with the guy to do 2 upper and 2 lower body sessions just to show you technique. Once you have the hang of it you'll be ok. Its bloody expensive though!
I agree with Chris, there are so many articles and websites on the net where you can teach yourself. Also, you can listen to your body, if its burning its working the right muscles!

I go the other way - use the trainer - you will get pushed (if you trust them and they understand your intent). If you have the 300 bucks, go for it!

I'm trying it out trainer-less, mostly because of the money involved and because I'm curious to see what I can accomplish by myself in 3 months.

BTW, I am 5'5 and not sure which all things would work best for me |

Nvedia - I don't think you need to spend 1K - but working with a trainer - will definitely help. If anything, it will provide 3 months of solid structured training - but don't let them change your plan - because they are not aware of the plan. Make sure you tell them what you want to do - or give them the book to read... and then push you to get it done.
I'm a big fan of trainers for a couple of reasons. They push you when you feel like crap and may not put all of it into the workout - and - if they are good - will teach you great technique.

I totally agree with Statona, and sorry, I wasn't being snarky about the 10K I was making a funny... ha ha... I lived in LA for so long that the excesses there became stereotypes of themselves if that makes sense.
So yeah, I'd totally spend the money on a GOOD trainer for three months and hit it HARD. You'll learn so much that you can take with you forever!

I also say go for it if you can - but make sure your trainer is fully aware of what you are trying to achieve!
I've had a variety of trainers over the last few years and yes, it is expensive. That's one reason I've decided to stay away while doing body for life as I too are keen to see what I can accomplish on my own. Also, if you don't like your trainer then get another. It's important you trust them and that they push you... I've had a trainer stand beside me on a treadmill offering their 'support'.
